On September 13th we had our first enrichment activity during advisory time. For enrichment visitors come to our school to share what they do. To go to an enrichment activity, students have to keep their grades up and fill out a ticket signed by their advisor teacher. For our first enrichment activity Officer Josh Carver and some other K-9 Officers brought some of their K9 dogs. They told us what some dogs do for the officers. For example, they help detain people in custody. They also do search and rescue and search for illegal substances. They brought in their first dog named Sam. He is a black lab. When Sam came in they did a little example of what the dogs are trained to do and what they do while on duty. They had three boxes in the gym and one of the boxes had this special scent that is supposed to resemble illegal substances that the dogs will find on the job. When Officer Carver let Sam off the leash he immediately ran towards the middle box. When Sam reached the box he sat and waited just like he was trained to do. Officer Carver did the same thing a couple times to see if Sam would get switched up and again like the first time, he ran straight towards the correct box. After Sam found the box, Carver threw Sam a toy that was a little reward for the dogs when they do their jobs correctly. Students that attended liked seeing what the K9 dogs do. Thanks to the K9 Officers and their dogs for visiting CMS and thanks to our enrichment planning team, Mrs. Vogelsberger and her advisory students!
